Chinese device maker Onda has unveiled the first tablet featuring an 8-core CPU from Allwinner. The Onda V989 is an iPad-sized Android tablet with an Allwinner A80-T octa-core processor.

It’s expected to launch soon for about $177.

  1. Interesting, as that’s an Allwinner SoC (that is in Linaro working group and have help of the Linux-sunxi community), it should not be so hard to install a full linux distro on it, as that’s the case on cubieboards, olimex, etc… :).

  2. Its like peoples are interesting in this device, we want to see in real life the performance of this machine, allwinner could be the winner, lest wait for a review, my two undefined is the heat, because we all know that’s the problem with allwinner SoC carrying and about the WiFi,if its dual band 5 GHz,for better browsing experience, I hope for this.

  3. Looks an awful lot like an upgraded “HP 7 Plus” that was release a couple months back.

  4. It looks like the main problem with this device is that the software is going to suck. Onda changes Android to look more like iOS and their software is widely panned as too buggy. If we could get stock Android on a cheap yet high spec device like this…

  5. After hearing about the next OS release – Android L, the concern I have now is that will any of these Chinese product manufactures (all of them, not just Onda) provide that OS update to their customers who have already purchased products once Google releases it?

That’s kind of a big deal and anyone in the market right now for a phone or tablet should be curious as to the answer too (which I don’t know myself yet unfortunately). Just what are the minimum specifications to be able to run Android L? Can Google release the OS updates through their Play Store rather than relying on manufacturers to do so? That would bypass a lot of this mess. Personally, I’m waiting for 64bit CPU’s to hit the Android landscape because that’s one of the main reasons Android L is coming out.

    1. Bay Trail is here, now….

Of course, it’s largely Onda that has them out and shipping, again.

    2. Why are you asking questions that nobody can answer you. lol.
Might as well ask God for winning lottery number for tomorrow.

      1. Dear God (and min009 since you’re the smartass troll), could I please have the winning lotto numbers for tomorrow please? K, thanx, bye.

  6. It’s expected to launch soon for about $177 ??? WOW really?
Now thats a price point that is exciting. BUT I agree with Bolo sounds too good to be true.

    1. $177 is the MSRP from Onda. E-retailer price with shipping is probably close to $217. Remember, online merchant needs to make some $$$ too.

        1. But for ppl over sea, you usually have to add at least $40 to that price.

    1. The pricing matches the rest of their other offerings. They have a Intel Bay-Trail tablet with a 2048 x 1536. If that could run Linux I would be all over it.

      1. They are releasing a windows 8.1 firmware for that Onda, a nix distro shouldn’t be too far away.

        1. Use LiveSuit and/or nand-part., AllWinner SoCs are not all jailed-brickable as Amercans products.

        2. Just seen that Allwinner support « officially support 5 operating systems: Android, Chrome OS (work in
progress), Ubuntu, Firefox OS, and Windows RT (commercial negotiations
          and work in progress) ».
