HP plans to begin selling a 14 inch notebook with an NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor and Google Android software in July. The HP SlateBook 14 has been the subject of numerous leaks, but now the Android laptop is official, and it’s coming to the United States this summer.

HP SlateBook 14

The notebook features a 14 inch, full HD touchscreen display, up to 9 hours of battery life, and a case that’s 0.63 inches thick and weighs about 3.7 pounds. In other words, it has the makings of a decent ultraportable PC… it just happens to run Android instead of Windows, OS X, or Chrome OS.

HP’s new Android app is Google certified, which means it’ll include access to the Google Play Store and other Google apps and services including the official Gmail, YouTube, and Google Maps apps.

The notebook has an HDMI port, microSD card reader, 1 USB 3.0 port and two USB 2.0 ports. It supports Miracast wireless display and despite Apple’s recent announcement that it’s acquiring Beats, this will be one of a number of HP products to ship with Beats Audio this year.

There are conflicting reports on the price and launch date. HP’s website says it will start at $399, while the official press release says $430. And the press release says it’ll be available in the US on July 20th, but Engadget says August 6th.

Either way, the HP SlateBook 14 will be an unusual option for folks looking for a new laptop this summer.

  1. If this was a dual boot chrome os device with an IPS screen (the latter may in fact be the case), then HP would have an amazing winner on their hands. I would be first in line for one. How powerful is the Tegra 4 proc vs. an Atom Bay Trail I wonder (not sure how one could even draw a comparison)?

  2. I think this is a good idea, however I think if it were 13 inches or less, and a bit lighter it would have been a better idea, or maybe nice to have both a large and a smaller one. Really 100X better than a chromebook, sad they couldn’t match them on price though, the components minus the 1080p screen can’t cost much more.

  3. I actually applaud the choice of Android 4.3 as it allows the proper use of external SD cards and file managers while still supporting fstrim to prevent that slowdown from older devices.

Now the question is just how expensive are the 32GN and 64 GB options.

Oh, and I must say that no ac Wi-Fi and no 5ghzWi-Fi are disappointing though most likely not deal breakers.

I just hope nobody gives one of these as a gift without knowing whether the giftee’s needs are met by Android or not.

    1. The WiFi details aren’t given but the Miracast support means a good chance it does have 5GHz because Miracast works best with dual 2.4GHz/5GHz WiFi… The 2.4GHz is used to establish the connection, while the 5GHz is used to stream the video…

And in case anyone didn’t bother reading the product page, Brad didn’t mention it either, it does have a 10 point multi-touch screen that should definitely help because Android is not very useful without a touch screen…

      1. Actually, on the product page at the bottom there’s the option to view the full specifications and it says Wireless1x1 802.11b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth®. Unfortunately it doesn’t say what type of Bluetooth.

        1. If that’s really the case then don’t expect good Miracast support… Definitely disappointing for something that starts at $400…
