HP’s first desktop computer to ship with Chrome OS is now available for $179.

The HP Chromebox is a tiny desktop with an Intel Haswell processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and Google’s browser-based operating system.

The computer’s small enough to hold in one hand, measuring about 5″ x 4.9″ x 1.5″. It’s powered by a 1.4 GHz Intel Celeron 2955U dual-core processor, features 1600 MHz memory, and an M.2 sized solid state drive.

Other features include 10/100 Ethernet, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, and Bluetooth 4.0. It has an SDXC card reader, HDMI and DisplayPort, and 4 USB 3.0 ports and mic and headset jacks.

All told, the HP Chromebox is an awful lot like the entry-level Asus Chromebox in terms of hardware and price. But HP is selling its Chromebox through its business division, which means that before you checkout you can customize your system with accessories including adapter, mounting kits, or even a Google Chrome for Education or Enterprise Management Console user license.

Need a bit more from your Chromebox? It’ll cost more money… but HP has a $199 model with a Celeron 2955U CPU and 4GB of RAM, and a $629 Chromebox with an Intel Core i7-4600U Haswell processor, Intel HD 440 graphics, 4GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage.

It’s the same size and shape as the Celeron model, and the rest of the specs look similar.

  1. Just in time to replace aging XP computers, and WITHOUT Windows 8 Metro Tiles!

  2. 10/100 Ethernet? Really? Of course, that’s coming from someone who won’t be running Chrome OS on this.

      1. $199 actually isn’t a bad price to pay for that, considering that ASUS doesn’t offer an equivalent with their Chromebox (of course you can upgrade yourself). @bradlinder:disqus do you plan to review this one as well? I know there won’t be much of a difference, but somehow I’m interested in a comparison.

      2. That there is now a 4GB Chromebox available for only $199 should be it’s own story here. I was holding off on getting one. But 4GB at this price is compelling.

  3. ” and 4 USB 4.0 ports ”
    .
Wow! A new version of USB! 😉

    1. I’ve got it in my head that this has a single RAM slot and the Asus has two – but I’m not positive of it.

      1. logical conclusion based on the HP website. Their i7 version is 2x2GB dimms, the celery ones have 1x2GB or 1x4GB.
