Google plans to bring Android to first-time smartphone users by partnering with companies to produce high quality, low-cost smartphones.
The program is called Android One, and initially the company will partner with 3 Indian smartphone makers, Micromax, Karbonn, and Spice. The first sub-$100 smartphones based on the Android One platform are expected to launch in India this fall.
The phones will run the stock version of Google Android and will receive automatic updates. Android One is a turn-key solution, which means that essentially Google is designing the phones and partners are building them.
At the Google IO developer conference keynote, Google’s Android chief Sundar Pichai introduced a Micromax phone with a 4.5 inch display, FM radio, an SD card slot, and dual SIM support.
It’s not clear if or when we’ll see fruits of the Android One initiative in more developed markets like the US and Europe.
Best program by Google in India. It is highly appreciated. Hopefully, Google updates these phones on time 🙂
