Google has released a minor update to Android. You can now download factory images and binaries for Google Android 4.4.3 KitKat for recent Nexus phones and tablets. It’ll likely begin rolling out to those devices via over-the-air updates soon and could be available for additional Android devices in the coming weeks and months.

In the meantime, I suspect we’ll see custom ROMs based on Android 4.4.3 in no time flat now that the update has also been pushed to the Android Open Source Project.

Google Android Kit Kat

The new version of Android is launching on the same day that Apple unveiled its next major update for iOS. But unlike iOS 8, there don’t seem to be any really big new features in Android 4.4.3. This is primarily and update aimed at fixing bugs and improving security.

Update: There are a few new features including updated phone dialer and People apps.

Android 4.4.3 images are available for the Google Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 smartphones, the Google Nexus 7 2012 and 2013 tablets, and the Google Nexus 10.

If you plan to install the update manually instead of waiting for an over-the-air update, note that you’ll need to use fastboot, not a recovery like TWRP or ClockworkMod.
