Now that Windows tablets with Intel Bay Trail processors are available, offering long battery life and decent performance, I’m reluctant to recommend picking up an older tablet with an Intel Atom Clover Trail processor.

That said… Newegg has a deal on a refurbished Asus VivoTam Smart ME400 with an Atom Z2760 dual-core CPU that’s too good not to mention. For $170 you can pick up a tablet with 64GB of storage, WiFi, Bluetooth, and a 10.1 inch 1366 x 768 pixel IPS display.

It’s one of the cheapest 10 inch Windows tablets I’ve seen to date, and it’s a full Windows 8.1 tablet, not a Windows RT machine. That said, if you spent a little more on a device with a better processor you’ll probably get better performance.

  1. Having upgraded both my laptops with 256GB Crucial SSDs recently, I cannot stress enough how much faster you machine will feel once you replace an HDD with an SSD (any SSD, but the MX100 would be a very good choice).

Even my lowly Thinkpad x100e (a slow laptop by today’s standards) is much more usable as a result of the upgrade thanks to the massive boost in speed the SSD gives to the virtual memory handling (the swap file).

If you’d rather not spend $400 on a new laptop, then upgrading to an SSD is the next best option, and much cheaper!

  2. A few things wrong with this post…. Firstly you say at the top the ME400 is in tigerdirect, then the link goes to newegg, then I click on the venue 11 pro and it takes me to a ipad mini????

    1. Sorry — it’s been a long few days trying to keep up with Computex news.

The post has been updated. Both of those issues should now be fixed.

      1. Be sure and catch Computex’s Microsoft Forum that’s happening 14:00-15:40 Taiwan time. That’s tonight @ 2AM Eastern Daylight Time!

I’m hoping to see some those tablets with Intel subsidized processors and free Windows 8.1 with Bing = supercheap Windows tablets?. Will read about it here at breakfast tomorrow. 🙂

  3. That 2nd Crucial SSD is actually a 256gb.

The 512gb one seems to have sold out pretty fast!

    1. Whoops… that would have been an even better deal!

Yeah… these SSDs are dirt cheap even without coupons. List prices are $110 for the 256GB and $225 for the 512GB. But it’s kind of crazy that TigerDirect is already offering coupons on the day they launched!

      1. I really wish I needed a SSD right now. Those are some great prices on good SSDs. Not the absolute fastest but rated well.

        1. Very few people would actually notice the difference in speed between a system with a low-end SSD in it (like the MX100) and a high-end one (like the M550).

There is not much point in buying something more expensive than the MX100 unless you know for sure that the extra performance would make a significant difference (e.g. for rendering large video files).
