BlackBerry is planning to launch a new smartphone at an event in London in September. What’s unusual about this phone is that it’ll likely have a big, high-resolution, square screen and a tiny keyboard.

Update: Here’s BlackBerry CEO john Chen holding the upcoming Blackberry Passport along with a BlackBerry Classic. The Passport is the phone with the big square screen and the tiny keyboard.

The phone will be called the BlackBerry Passport, but according to CrackBerry it’s code-named Windermere, and according to N4BB it looks something like this:

The phone will likely be BlackBerry’s first device with a 4.5 inch, 1440 x 1440 pixel display with 453 pixels per inch.

The new screen resolution for a “next generation device” was first mentioned by BlackBerry when the company unveiled the documentation for BlackBerry 10.3, the next version of its smartphone operating system.

Other features of BlackBerry 10.3 are expected to include support for the Amazon Appstore for Android apps, support for endless folders in the home screen, updated icons, a quick settings menu that you can bring up with a two-finger swipe, and more.

  1. Waiting for BB to allow Google Application Store as well. That would be the hit!

  2. Passport looks like Blackberry’s take on the Phablet; Classic I dig a lot as a trad’l BB user.

  3. Love BB! Wouldn’t choose another phone so hopefully will keep going strong

  4. I like them…And soon with the ability to install Amazon App store applications, these BB10 phones are serious business!!

  5. IMO, I think it is nice looking. It has an unusual design that appeals to me.

  6. A couple things I want to note:

    1) It isn’t totally confirmed that the pictures we have seen are the final look of the phone

    2) There are some pictures floating around of John Chen(BlackBerry CEO) holding the above pictured phone

For those wondering: it hasn’t been confirmed but it’s long been rumored this will be a “hybrid keyboard” meaning it is physical but it will also have gestures for the frets. So you swipe up and it would bring up the punctuation keys. Things like that.

  7. Wow… but no shift key? Or punctuation? Will they use the on screen keyboard for that?

    1. Though you may already know this (some may not though)…Windermere was the internal code name used for the phablet (‘er phone) on leaked road maps that have been around for years. I still think this is a VERY ugly device though and I am a BlackBerry user…

FYI, here is a full shot of the Classic (the retro looking phone) and this Passport
