Asus is no stranger to the all-in-one desktop space. But the company’s Portable AiO PT2001 is an unusual model nonetheless, thanks to its built-in battery, kickstand, and carrying handle which lets you pick up the desktop, carry it from room to room, and prop it down on a table (or fold it flat) for use with or without plugging into a wall jack.

Asus says you should be able to get up to 5 hours of battery life… which means you really could thing of the AiO PT2001 as a “portable” device… if your definition of portable includes desktops that weigh 7.1 pounds.

Dell also unveiled a battery-toting 19.5 inch all-in-one desktop today. But Dell’s model is an entry-level device with an Intel Bay Trail processor and prices starting at $350.

Asus hasn’t announced the pricing for its new AiO yet… but it’ll probably be a bit more expensive than that thanks to its support for features up to an Intel Core i5 Haswell processor and NVIDA GeForce GT820M graphics.

Other specs include a 19.5 inch, 1600 x 900 pixel IPS toucshcreen display, 4GB of RAM, and Windows 8.1 operating system. 802.11ac WiFi is optional, as is NFC support.

  1. Unusual, maybe, but not really unique. Recalls to mind the Sony Tap 20/21, not to mention the Tablet mode of Asus’s own Transformer AiO (w Windows not virtualised off system).

A i5 and 820m… Seems like the necessary price point may slip by them…

  2. well… with 3.2kg its lighter than many old notebooks and 5h battery isn’t that bad either (compared with the same).
then again you will have to bring keyboard/mouse and co. with you.

not a device i would buy, but i can see that there would be some kind of usecase for some people.

  3. I actually think these are a brilliant idea. The uber-tablet. Though I’d prefer a little larger – 24″ maybe. What they need is a clever wall/charging mount. Would be brillaint to hang in a kitchen. Watch video – listen to music – leave family notes/messages – keep the shopping list up to date – skype – follow a recipe – ask Google for a measure conversion – keep an eye on the security or baby cam. All up on the wall not using counter space. Then the kids could take it to put flat on a table and game on. Or take it to the patio to check mail or do some writing. Or maybe off to a private corner for a little Netflix.
Just a general jack-of-all-trades machine for around the house use – with enough portability and enough size to enable some new usage modes. The larger screen would be great. And not everyone likes to haul their phone with them every step they take in life. It’s often annoying to keep with you just around the house.
