Amazon is inviting customers, developers, and members of the media to an event in Seattle on June 18th, where the company plans to unveil a new… something.

Amazon isn’t saying what it is… but it’s probably a smartphone.

The company offers tablets, TV boxes, and eReaders. A smartphone seems like a natural step for a company that already has a mobile app store and some of the best digital media services around.

We’ve been hearing rumors about an Amazon smartphone for years, but they’ve really picked up in the last few months. If you believe the rumors and alleged leaks, we can expect a 4.7 inch phone with a 720p display, 2GB of RAM, a Qualcomm processor, and a 3D user interface that relies on front-facing sensors to track your eye movements and adjust on-screen elements accordingly.

You may also be able to control some features of the phone by tilting it instead of tapping the screen. And Amazon may be preparing to launch something called Prime Data, which could offer a limited amount of “free” mobile data when customers use AT&T to access certain Amazon services.

While none of those features have been confirmed yet, Amazon did post a teaser video on its website showing the reaction of several people who seem to be looking at a handheld device for the first time. They keep moving their heads and remarking about how incredible it is that whatever they’re seeing seems to react… so it seems likely that the 3D user interface we’ve been hearing about is going to be included.

  1. No one is pointing out just how innovative these features are, and how different this product seems to be (from the rumors) with regard to everything else on the market. Maybe cause features are just rumors I guess, but I find this product very interesting.

  2. I guess it has a glossy display and they are just admiring their reflections
