Firefox OS is an operating system for smartphones and tablets developed by the makers of the Firefox web browser. Up until recently, the only devices that actually shipped with the software have been low-end devices with low resolution displays and single core processors.

But the folks at Mozilla have been working to add support for additional hardware, improve performance, and add new features to Firefox OS. And while the software still targets entry and mid-level devices rather than top-tier phones and tablets, we’re starting to see devices with dual-core chips and WVGA or higher-resolution screens.

The ZTE Open C, for instance, is a $100 phone with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 CPU and a 4 inch, 800 x 480 pixel display.

Want something a little geekier? The Flame is a new reference phone that Mozilla uses to develop Firefox OS… and now you can pre-order one for yourself for $170.

Firefox OS Flame

The Flame reference phone is available for pre-order from Everbuying from May 27th through June 10th. The first units should arrive by June 30th, 2014.

The phone has a 4.5 inch, 854 x 480 pixel display, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, and a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 dual-core processor. It ships with Firefox OS 1.3, and since it’s aimed at developers, there are a few nifty features, including:

  • You can adjust the available RAM from 256MB to 1GB to replicate low-end hardware for testing purposes.
  • The phone is bootloader and carrier unlocked, so you can change the operating system and use it on any GSM network.

Other features include Dual SIM support, a microSD card slot for up to 32GB of removabel storage, an 1800mAH battery, a 5MP rear camera with auto focus and flash, and a 2MP front-facing camera, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, FM radio, NFC, an ambient light sensor, and A-GPS.

  1. This is what you get for putting all your efforts into bullshitware rather than concentrating on product, Shuttleworth.
    You and your non-existent products are irrelevant.

  2. With the reports that Google is getting out of the nexus game, one wonders if Canonical wouldn’t be well served by using Mozilla reference products for its own Ubuntu Touch reference purposes…. low powered as they may be.

    1. You think much too logically; of course it would be;
      BUT…
      You really think Shuttleworth’s monstrously massive ego would permit this?
