Motorola’s first smartwatch to feature Google’s new Android Wear software will likely cost about $249 when it goes on sale this summer. How do we know that? Because Motorola is holding a design contest with a Moto 360 smartwatch as the prize — and the contest rules say the grand prize has a value of $249.

Runners-up, by the way, will get $50 gift cards good for purchases from the Google Play Store.

Update: Motorola says the $249 figure is the “approximate retail value” for tax purposes… and doesn’t necessarily reflect the actual retail price. Take that however you like.

It’s possible the Moto 360 could have a lower price tag when it goes on sale, but it seems unlikely that it’ll sell for more than the amount listed in the contest.

The Moto 360 features a round design, support for a variety of watch faces, interchangeable wrist straps, and Google’s software which lets you pair a watch with your smartphone and view notifications and other information on your wrist. It supports voice controls and touch-based gesture input.

Motorola hasn’t unveiled detailed specs for the watch yet and all we really know for certain is that it’s supposed to hit the streets by this summer. With the winner of the aforementioned contest expected to receive a notice on June 24th, it seems like a late June launch could be in the works.

  1. Definitely the nicest looking smartwatch around. Just wondering how big the face is. Despite being a 30 odd year old male I’ve got small girlish wrists. 🙁

  2. That’s not much higher than a lot of automatic watches out there, much less than some… and there are still a good number of automatic watches being sold today.

Swiss watches (both mechanical & electricity-based) are produced in the 30m / year level, easily averaging well over $250, and many owners will have more than one watch.

Will be interesting to see if Motorola (& Google) can pull this off, and at this price becomes all the more likely.
