Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 805 processor will be the company’s most powerful chip to date when it launches in the second half of 2014… but it’s not that much faster than the Snapdragon 801 CPU that’s already available.

AnandTech reports that where it really shines is in select graphic tests, thanks to the new Adreno 440 graphics technology.

We should see even bigger enhancements when the company’s first ARMv8 chips launch in early 2015.

Here’s a roundup of tech news from around the web.

  • Detailed preview of Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 performance
The chip has 4 Qualcomm Krait 450 CPU cores, Adreno 420 graphics, H.265 decoding support, and scores quite similarly to the Snapdragon 801 in CPU benchmarks. But it comes out ahead in certain graphics tests. [AnandTech]
  • CyanogenMod will learn to cheat at benchmarks, just like a real smartphone OS
Benchmarks are supposed to tell you what kind of maximum performance to expect from your device. But phone makers have a habit of tweaking their software to run at higher clock speeds when running benchmarks so the results aren’t always reflective of real-world performance. New builds of CyanogenMod will also do this.. but you’ll be able to enable or disable the feature… and choose which other apps (besides benchmarks) benefit from the performance boost. Your battery life might suffer though. [Android Police]
  • Dell expands its recycling program and plans to offer PCs built with recycled plastic
The first model will be an all-in-one Optiplex 3030 all-in-one desktop which launches in June. [Computer World]
  • Google Chrome 36 beta includes new tools for developers
One new feature is support for CSS animations in JavaScript. It’s the first portion of an upcoming Web Animations API to make it into Chrome. [Chromium Blog]
  • FreedomPop now offers “unlimited” phone data plan
Like many other “unlimited” data plans, you only get a limited amount of 4G LTE data. After you hit 1GB your speeds will drop to 3G for the rest of the month. What makes FreedmPop’s plan unusual though, is that it’s only $20 per month. The only catch is that it’s based on Sprint’s network — so if you’re in an area with poor reception, this might not be the plan for you. [GigaOm]
  • Pipo’s latest tablet is a 9.7 inch model with an RK3288 chip
    The upcoming Pipo P1 has a 9.7 inch, 2048 x 1536 pixel display, an RK3288 ARM Cortex-A17 quad-core processor, ARM Mali-T764 graphics, 2GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage. [AndroidPC.es]
  • HP to cut 16,000 jobs
That will bring the total number of jobs cut since Meg Whitman took over in 2012 to about 50,000. That’s a lot of restructuring.  [Re/Code]

  1. This is off topic. But I was wondering what theme this site is. I’m pretty sure this is one of the StudioPress child themes running on Genesis Framework on WordPress. I would guess that it’s Magazine Pro or Metro Pro.

      1. Brad, would you consider putting a Top of Page anchor link in the footer text area say, beside privacy? It would help on longer articles – just a nice to have UI tweak. Thanks for the consideration!

        1. Sure… I think I used to have something like that on the old theme once upon a time. Anyway, easy enough fix. It’s already added. 🙂

      2. Are you still satisfied with Genesis? Would you recommend it? Also, how has your experience been since switching to Disqus for comments? Would you recommend that? I realize this is all off topic. But I’m about to start a niche site using WordPress. It would be great if you could write about your experience building this site, the technology you used, and the things you did to get it to be so popular.

        1. Genesis: Yep. One of the nice things about the framework is that it’s a popular framework used by many people — so it’s very easy to find tutorials and other articles helping you find ways to tweak or customize it.
Disqus: I’ve been using Disqus pretty much since Liliputing started and haven’t looked into alternatives lately. As Disqus tries to find ways to monetize their product (which I can’t blame them for), I haven’t always been thrilled with the new features they roll out. But it’s a powerful commenting system that has a lot more features than the default WordPress comments… and allows users to sign in using a variety of different ID systems.
As for building an audience: Luck has a lot to do with it. I tried launching a second site to hedge my bets a few years back. I worked at least as hard to build Mobiputing as I had to develop Liliputing. It didn’t work.

My advice: If you want to build a blog for the fun of it and because you’re passionate about a topic and want to share the fruits of your research with the public, go for it. If you want to make money, don’t quit your day job. You’ll be lucky to make pennies a day blogging even if you have amazing content.

If you really want to learn the business, go find another website that’s hiring writers. They’ll pay you and give you on-the-job training… plus a reputation which you might be able to leverage if you ever want to launch your own site. But it still might fail.
