Amazon’s Kindle eReaders are designed to let you read eBooks for days on end thanks to a low-power processor and high-contrast E Ink display. But like many consumer electronics devices, the Kindle is basically a single-purpose computer… and with a little tweaking you can turn it into a multi-purpose machine.

We’ve seen Kindles turned into secondary displays, or simply hacked to support custom wallpapers and fonts.

Now one hacker has turned a Kindle into a thermometer.

kindle thermometer

The Kindle Thermometer hack should work on a jailbroken Kindle 4 eReader. and it will display the temperature in Farenheit or Centigrade on the screen using a large font.

How does the device figure out the temperature? The Kindle has a temperature sensor to monitor the Freescale CPU… and since the CPU isn’t actually doing much most of the time, it usually runs at close to room temperature.

The software checks the temperature once a minute and displays it on the screen. You can also display a graph of recent temperatures or connect to your Kindle over a local network to view the temperatures on your computer thanks to a web server built into the software.

You can exit the thermometer app and return to regular Kindle eReader mode with the press of a button — although you may have to reboot your device to re-enable WiFi once you do that.

  1. I wonder what’s in store for us with the next version of the Kindle. Would be cool if they did something like Clippings.io for organizing book notes..

  2. It would be more useful if it display the current outside temperature of your local area – by tapping into an RSS feed.
