Like the idea of a 7 inch device that can serve as both a smartphone and a tablet, but not impressed by the lackluster specs of the latest Asus FonePad? Chinese device maker Chuwi might have the answer.

The new Chuwi VX3 is a smartphone with a 7 inch, full HD display, an 8-core CPU, Android 4.4 KitKat software, and a price tag of just about $200.

The device features a 1.7 GHz Mediatek MTK6592 octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage. It has a 7 inch, 1920 x 1200 IPS pixel capacitive touchscreen display and features a 8MP rear camera and 2MP front-facing camera.

There’s a mini HDMI port, microSD card slot, and micro USB port, and the phone supports 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth, and support for GSM and WCDMA networks.

While the phone/tablet was designed for the Chinese market, where it’s available from JD.com, it’s available for order and/or pre-order internationally from stores including Geekbuying, PandaWill, and the AliExpress marketplace with prices running between $185 and $220.

Before you pull out your wallet, there are a few things to consider. First, the 3000mAh battery is only good for up to 4 hours of screen on time. Second, the phone only supports WCDMA networks in the 2100 MHz band… which means that US customers will only be able to get 2G speeds if they try to use the Chuwi VX3 with AT&T or T-Mobile. It won’t support Verizon or Sprint at all.

  1. This format with FHD IPS 7″ display, has been around for months now. Check the original Ulefone U7 on sites like pandawill or antelife.

  2. Many of these Chinese devices look great on paper,
but unless the build quality, long term reliability, firmware
updates, and after-sales service support are there to
complement the impressive specs, the devices won’t
take hold in the US market. There are already many
products available from importers and on Ebay, and
newcomers will need to compete on more than price.

  3. With those specs, it looks like a good budget tablet option that could just happen to be used as a phone in a pinch. If I didn’t already have a 7 inch tablet, I’d consider buying this for use primarily as a tablet. Very interesting.

  4. It is an interesting device, but I am not sure who needs/wants a 7″ phone. Especially one that has terrible battery live and only 2G speed. Drop the screen to 6″, up the battery a bit and at least make it 3G and watch it move off the shelves.

    1. I’m pretty sure it isn’t 2G only in China. As for the battery, I wonder if it can hold a charge all day if it isn’t in constant use?

  5. main competition for it right now is my Huawei Mediapad X1 (https://www.geekbuying.com/item/Huawei-Honor-X1-7-0Inch-Hisilicon-Kirin-910-Quad-Core-3G-Mediapad-IPS-LTPS-Screen-2GB-RAM-16GB-13-0MP-Camera-Android-4-2-325864.html ), costs almost double, but 1920×1200 screen (like my 26″ desktop monitor.. maybe too much ?) and very large batteyr (last at least 2 days)
I could handle my 6″ Ascend Mate one-handed almost all the time, but 7″ is too much, 2 hands are required almost always.
Edit: the X1 supports all the right bands though, at least in Europe ? There’s an LTE version too.
