Oppo Smart Lens could turn your phone into a (better) camera

04/27/2014 at 8:30 AM by Brad Linder 10 Comments

Like to use your phone to snap photos, but wish it had a better camera lens? No problem — just slap on an external lens with optical zoom and high quality optics.

Sony offers a line of lenses that connect to your phone over WiFi and NFC.

Now it looks like Chinese smartphone maker Oppo is preparing to launch its own wireless camera lens called the Oppo Smart Lens.

Pictures of the new Smart Lens showed up at Chinese micr0-blogging site Weibo, and they show a a lens with support for 10x optical zoom and the ability to pair with a smartphone via NFC.

This isn’t simply a lens that you place on top of your existing lens to add a telescope feature. Instead, it’s a standalone device that lets you bypass your built-in camera while still using your phone’s camera app to frame, save, edit, and share photos.

You clearly have a thing for big dicks! But leave your fantasies out of the tech discussions Barry.

message to Sony: can we please waterproof the QX-10 and QX-100? At least to the same level as the Xperia Z phones? That would be all. You can have my money then. Oh, and Oppo: Do likewise. And have your lens connect via something more long range, WiFi, or at least bluetooth. Thank you.

NFC does use wifi, NFC is slow but low power and short range, so it says ‘hey I’ll set you up with my buddy wifi using these settings’ or ‘hey use my buddy bluetooth’, NFC just negates the need for pins/passwords because it’s physically secure due to being short range.

I fail to see how this is different from either QX10 or QX100.

It’s made by Oppo. (Not every company produces products that are substantively different from those of their competitors).

I think these types of companies are going about this the wrong way. I could see a company make a DSLR type camera kit, minus the screen part, and then incorporate a docking mechanism into their smartphone so it could be inserted into the camera. Kind of like the tablets that accepted cell phones. People who take photography seriously would never use the type of setup in the photo above. But, they probably would in a traditional camera format with all their existing lenses, filters, flash, etc. Docking a cell phone screen would allow all kinds of features (editing, wi-fi transfer, cellular transfer, GPS tagging, instant uploads to facebook or your blog, etc.) This looks flimsy and I really can’t imagine it taking very good photos.
