Android TV box maker MINIX has earned a reputation (among the small group of folks who track these things) for offering products with reliable performance and decent specs. Now the company is introducing two new boxes designed to let you run Android apps on your TV, and they’re the most powerful MINIX boxes yet.

The MINIX Neo X8 and Neo X8s are both powered by versions of the Amlogic S802 quad-core processor with Mali-450 graphics.

The MINIX Neo X8 features 2GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, an external antenna, HDMI and S/PDIF ports, a 10/100 Ethernet jack, 3 USB 2.0 ports, an SD card slot, and an IR receiver. It can handle 4K video output.

The box runs Android 4.4 KitKat and comes with a MINIX edition of the XBMC media player.

If you want a little more for your money, the Neo X8s is mostly the same, but it features 16GB of storage, dual-band WiFi, and an Amlogic S802-H chip with Dolby Digital audio.

MINIX is also introducing a new Neo M1 wireless air mouse that you can use as a remote control for its TV boxes or for just about any Windows, Android, OS X, or Linux box. It comes with a USB plug-and-play receiver, has a gyroscopic sensor, and features Android keys, direction buttons, and media buttons.

The company hasn’t yet revealed the price or launch date for its new TV boxes or remote control.

  1. Great. Long Live Android!!! Smart Devices and Superb Prices! What do you want more????!!

  2. Impressive specs, but they are leaving behind the Rockchip rk3188, which has amazing community support for custom Roms, and Ubuntu. Let’s hope this chip is supported as well as the rk3188

    1. Rockchip has a poor reputation for supporting opensource development. Most of the custom ROMs tend to be hacks with many crippled features. Note how there are few KitKat ROMs available for any Rockchip SoC. AmLogic on the other has had a reputation for being more opensource friendly. Proof? I’m running a “custom” CyanogenMod 11 ROM (based on Android 4.4) on my two year old no-name China tablet, and the official firmware is only Android 4.0 (ICS)!

      1. Im new to the Arm Linux thing, what is the best device or cpu to use for an Arm linux box? I would love something to run Xubuntu 14.04. I have an RK3066 stick, it’s very slow and poor feature support
