Intel is updating its line of education-oriented tablet and notebook reference designs with its first 2-in-1 device. The Intel Education 2-in-1 looks a bit like the Classmate PC convertible netbooks of yesteryear, but instead of a notebook with a hinge that lets you twist the screen around for tablet use, the 2-in-1 is a tablet with a detachable keyboard base.
The Intel Education 2-in-1 tablet features a 10.1 inch display, an Intel Atom Z3740D quad-core Bay Trail processor, and runs Windows 8.1 software.
Intel says the tablet gets up to 7.8 hours of battery life. There’s a second battery in the keyboard dock, which brings the total run time closer to 11 hours when you use the 2-in-1 in laptop mode.
Students can dock the tablet to the keyboard so that the screen is facing the keys for use as a laptop. But they can also flip around the tablet so the screen is facing away from the keyboard, allowing you to use the dock as a sort of stand and extra battery while using the touchscreen instead of the keyboard.
Like other Intel Education notebook and tablet designs, the 2-in-1 features a rugged case that’s water and dust resistant and able to withstand a fall of about 28 inches.
Intel’s tablet has front and rear cameras, and works with accessories including a snap-on magnification lens that can work with Intel’s education software and a temperature probe. There’s also a stylus that students can use to write notes or make drawings. It fits into a slot on the side of the tablet.

Considering the short lifespan & high replacement/repair costs of the IPAD tablets at my daughter’e elementary school, these look way better but I still have doubts about their suitability in the classroom environment.
I’m still waiting for the HP Classmate (Bay Trail cpu) to come out, haven’t seen it anywhere though HP did press on it in January. It has the same camera magnifier attachment and a thermometer attachment. No pricing was ever announced for the HP Classmate either.
