Online video service Hulu lets you stream thousands of TV episodes and movies over the internet. But up until now if you’ve wanted to use Hulu on a smartphone or tablet, you’ve been limited to watching free clips instead of full episodes unless you ponied up $7.99 per month for a Hulu Plus subscription.

That changes this summer. Hulu plans to start offering TV episodes to mobile users for free.

Update: Select Hulu content is now available for free on Android devices.

There are a few catches. First, only select content will be available: You won’t necessarily be able to watch all the same shows on a mobile device that you can view in a desktop browser. And Second, like everything else on Hulu, the content will be ad-supported.

Of course, you’d have to put up with ads even if you did pay for a Hulu Plus subscription.

Hulu says it now has over 6 million Hulu Plus subscribers. Folks who do pay for a subscription get more than access to Hulu on mobile devices and set-top-boxes like a Roku box or Amazon Fire TV. They also get access to a deeper library of content including past seasons of current TV shows.
