Expecting a $1500 tax refund, and looking for a way to spend it all in one go? The company will let just about anyone in the United States join the Google Glass Explorer program for a limited time starting at 9:00 AM Eastern on April 15th.

Up until now, if you’ve wanted to get your hands on a pre-release version of Google’s wearable computer you’ve needed an invitation.

You can sign up to receive a reminder at the Google Glass website, or just make sure to visit on April 15th. The program is open to US residents over the age of 18 with a valid US shipping address.

$1500 is still a lot of money to spend on a device that still has limited used. But a growing number of developers and other early adopters have been testing the platform in recent months, which means there are a growing number of apps designed to run on Glass.

It’s too soon to say whether Google’s April 15th event is a signal that Glass will be ready for consumers soon — but right now you need to spend $1500 to join the Explorer program which means the platform is still very much aimed at enthusiasts, early adopters, and developers.

Google’s also trying to attract business app developers to create software for Glass. This week the company introduced its Glass at Work initiative to help promote apps and services that help people use Glass in the workplace in industries including medicine, construction, and sports.

  1. So now anyone and everyone can get on board and wait for that killer app that I’m certain will be coming around any time now.
    any time now

    1. Okay, I’m curious now, what exactly is a smartphone’s killer app? I mean you had instant messaging, maps and web access on dumbphones as they progressed towards smartphones, but was there any one app that made them a must-have? I’m just asking because I’m not sure GG needs one, at a reasonable price tag it would be enough to have heads up maps, notifications, wireless headphones essentially and various other things. I’m gonna guess you don’t agree 😛
