Google released a new version of its camera app for Android this week, and offered it as a free update through the Play Store for anyone running Android 4.4 or later. The most noticeable new features in the Google Camera app are its redesigned user interface and the new Lens Blur feature which lets you adjust the focus of a photo, even after saving the picture.

But it turns out the app actually has the hints of upcoming features tucked away in the code.

The folks at Android Police have made a habit of dissecting APK files for new Google apps, and when they worked their magic on the new Google Camera app, here are some of the things they found references for:

  • Wide Angle Mode
  • Time Lapse
  • Advanced Camera Mode
  • Photo Spheres as a Live Wallpaper
  • Touch to take a photo while recording video
  • Video effects including “big eyes,” “small mouth,” “in space,” and “sunset”

None of these features are currently available, but it looks like Google is at least considering including them in future releases of its camera app. The Time Lapse option seems to allow you to snap photos at regular intervals for up to 24 hours, while the Photo Spheres option would let you create an 360 degree image of a place and set it as your Android home screen wallpaper.

  1. If I had Android 4.4 or later I wouldn’t probably need to download a better camera app. It’s a shame they can’t make this available to people on 4.2 or 4.3 at least.

  2. The current version of the app (at least on Nexus 5) doesn’t seem to have a whole lot of features and everyone (seemingly) is complaining about the size of the shutter button.

It’s a usable app, but certainly no better than the stock camera at this point.
