The FunBox is a Chinese video game console with an NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor, 2GB of RAM, and an Android-based operating system. Developed by ZTE and The9, the FunBox launched in China recently, and now it’s available internationally for $159… if you don’t mind ordering from a reseller at retail marketplace AliExpress.

The box is powered by NVIDIA’s quad-core, ARM Cortex-A15 processor and features 8GB of storage plus 2 USB ports, HDMI and Ethernet jacks, and a microSD card slot.

It runs Android 4.3 and features support for Android games as well as media apps. The FunBox features Dolby DigitalPlus audio, support for 4K video, and dual-band WiFi.

Along with the box itself, you get a media-centric remote control with Android home, back, and menu keys and a wireless game controller with the usual analog and digital sticks and buttons as well as a few dedicated Android buttons for home and back functions.

The FunBox packs a lot more horsepower than the $99 Ouya game console, which could help explain its higher price tag. But that might not be the best point of comparison anymore. Amazon charges $99 for its Fire TV set-top-box which has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor and 2GB of RAM… but Amazon does charge an extra $40 for its video game controller.

Still, if you’re looking for a well-supported Android box for playing games and streaming video, the Fire TV might be the device to beat at the moment. If you’re looking for something a little… different, I suppose it’s nice to have the option of paying a few bucks more for the ZTE FunBox even though it’s not yet officially sold in US stores.

    1. That was for just the console minus controller. The controller was then to be about $30. Not sure if they are selling them seperatly now. The whole package inc controller is what’s on sale on the Chinese stores for $112 RRP or 698 yuan

  1. The funbox is sold for $112 RRP, this guy is just after a quick buck like those that sell on ebay internationally for huge mark ups even though the product is sold much cheaper in local stores.

Other sites that sell internationally will pick it up and sell it for close to $112 soon, just wait for them IMO . Would be good I suppose to root and get stock android on it.

  2. Can’t belive they begin to sell it, the Funbox just have chinese language, and even no english, and there is no google play store , and you even can’t install the 3rd party apps….

    those aliexpress seller….

    1. well..there are chinese peoples in other countries too.. why not they can have it?

  3. I believe the Fire TV is powered by the S4 Pro (a la the Nexus 7), not the 600, if I’m not mistaken.

    1. It uses krait 300 cores at 1.7Ghz and has an adreno 320. So it is essentially the same as the S600 in the HTC One. I think the S4 pro officially uses krait 200.

If the FireTV used the S800 the SoCs would be on more or less equal footing. On the other hand this has Bluetooth 3.0 of I remember correctly instead of the Fire TV’s and the M.O.J.O.’s 4.0, meaning a controller with shorter battery life and longer lag.

It’s still potentially a good product for a good price. But it also depends on what you want to do with it etc.

Another question is what marketplace does it use and what kind of selection does it have?
