The makers of the popular PC cleanup utility CCleaner have launched a public beta of CCleaner for Android. The app’s been under development for more than a year, and now you can take it for a test drive by joining the beta community on Google+ and then visiting the CCleaner page in the Google Play Store to grab the latest test build.

CCleaner for Android

There’s no shortage of apps that let you analyze and free up storage space on Android phones and tablets. For the last few years Google has even allowed you to delete your cache manually by opening the Storage settings on your device and long-clicking on the Cache item.

But there are two things CCleaner has going for it. The first is an attractive, easy to navigate user interface. The second is a reputation as one of the best disk space cleaner utilities available for Windows PCs.

When you launch the app, it’ll tell you how much space your device has, how much is used, and let you analyze your device to find items you can delete or apps you can uninstall to free space.

In addition to deleting your cache, you can delete your browser history and call or SMS logs from within the app, or open other apps such as the Chrome web browser to manually clean your cache.

CCleaner for Android also has a built-in app manager that shows how much storage each app on your device uses, and to let you uninstall them. Of course, that’s something you could also do using the default Android app manager.

Finally there’s a System info screen which shows disk space, CPU and memory usage, and temperature and battery level information at a glance.

While the Android version of CCleaner isn’t quite as powerful as the company’s desktop app, it’s a nice looking app that could come in handy from time to time. And it’s nice to see Piriform is paying attention to the mobile space.

Eventually the team plans to add extra features for rooted devices, custom folder cleaning, and more.

  1. I never really liked using these cleaners. They sometimes have unwanted side affects especially when software that gets “cleaned” receives an update and breaks the assumptions the cleaner makes about it. I’ve seen people just ticking checkboxes without thinking and end up with corrupt applications and even a corrupt OS.

I usually try to look up what these cleaners are actually doing. If I understand it then I create scripts to manually do it. If I update affected software then I verify that what I’m doing is still valid. If not then I fix it or stop doing it.
