Phone maker ZTE and game developer The9 are getting ready to launch a new Android-powered game console in China this month. It’s called the Fun Box, and it’s powered by an NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor, which makes it one of the most powerful devices of its type (along with the Mad Catz M.O.J.O.).

The Fun Box has NVIDIA’s quad-core ARM Cortex-A15 processor, 2GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, dual-band WiFi, and 2 USB ports.

It also works with a wireless game controller and there also seems to be a wireless air mouse remote that you can use to control media playback, among other things.

According to Bloomberg, the Fun Box should launch this month, but details and photos have been leaking in advance of the official announcement. Unfortunately there’s still no word on how much the system will cost or whether it’ll be available outside of China… although it’s unclear just how much demand there is for Android-based game consoles at the moment.

  1. There are so many people making Android consoles right now because they are soo easy to make. The real R&D goes into making the software work, and most companies won’t bother with that until they have sold enough units for people to complain about not getting good software haha.

    1. The hard part of making a console is maintaining customer and developer interest in the platform. None of these “consoles” offer anything different. At least the Ouya developed their own platform and store, despite all its flaws.

  2. Seems like everyone is making an Android based game system these days. I doubt most will survive until the end of the year. By the middle of next year there will probably only be 2-3 of these systems still standing. Ouya is likely to be one of the survivors. Not good odds for the rest.

  3. Could use one of these for an HTPC box, imagine the power and flexibility if this thing is priced below $150

  4. Sticking with Ouya for now.
It is totally capable of running the games available for it and they are all designed to work with the controller with little or no BS.
Come summer time or if some compelling Tegra-4 only app or game emerges that may change, but for right now I’ve already got a cube that’s close to my heart. 🙂
