The ZTE Grand S II is a 5.5 inch smartphone with a 1080p display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor, and voice recognition features that let you wake the phone or even snap a picture with the camera without touching it.

Now it looks like the Grand S II may also be the first smartphone to ship with 4GB of RAM.

The folks at G for Games noticed a listing for ZTE’s upcoming phone at Chinese regulator Tenaa’s website, and it describes a phone with a 2.3 GHz processor and 4GB of RAM.

Up until now most phones have shipped with 3GB of memory or less… and only a handful of devices have even featured that much. Odds are you won’t notice much difference in performance between a phone with 2GB and 4GB of RAM today… but a 4GB model is slightly more future-proof and will likely hold up better as new apps and operating system updates are released which take advantage of the extra memory.

Interestingly the Tenaa listing also suggests the phone will have a 8MP rear camera and 2MP front-facing camera. When ZTE introduced the Grand S II in January, the company said it would have a 13MP rear shooter.

Other specs are expected to include 16GB of storage, a microSD card slot, and a 3000mAh battery. But at this point it seems that the specs might be in flux.

  2. 4GB is the max for 32-bit. Unless x86 memory instructions are different from ARM as anonymous says, they could be more or less than 4GB. 64 bit starts to get interesting at 6 or 8GB and up, where it’s really used. But most of my intensive computing happens on a desktop. Wake me up when I need to waste less battery, perpetually keeping the standby power of my phone at less than a couple days. I’d like a phone with a talk time of 7 days over Voip (wifi) app, and a standby of a month. near-threshold voltage and super simple android or ubuntu interface using a 4,000mah battery or more.

    1. I’m fortunate to have a Nokia with a decent battery that lasts me 4+ days on standby. Though i prefer to use wifi and that lessens the life. 10mw signal is too weak for multiple rooms in a house, but 100mw uses too much battery to last long. I like other wifi specifications.

  3. I hope that we can get Ubuntu for Android on this? This is one of the best phones to run it.

  4. Is Android becoming so bloated that we need desktop levels of RAM now?

    1. The more they push things like being able to multi-task then yes, devices like the newer Samsung Note Pro series are pushing the ability to run split screen apps for side by side usages of multiple apps and Google is still working on a desktop mode for Android, as well as what Chrome can do…

      So, Android may lack any high end apps that would need a lot of RAM but nothing stopping it from still using up a lot of memory in other ways… Mind, they’re also pushing graphical performance and being embedded means it shares the RAM for video memory too…

  5. Hmmm 4 GB of RAM with a 32 bit CPU… Sounds either false rumour or pretty bad gimmick just to have better specs than other phones…

  6. *sigh* 4GB of RAM is nice, but snapdragon 800 isn’t, iirc that’s still using cores that’re somewhere between A9 and A15 in terms of performance, so something with full A15s beats it (exynos, tegra). Futureproof it is therefore not, though I guess if you’re not gaming it’ll be fine.

    1. Please tell me which games on Android will lag on s800? I can’t find any that will lag Chinese tablet.

Hmm, well something heavily CPU-bound would be little inferno, it lags on my nexus 4 when you burn a lot of things at once, been meaning to try it on a tegra 4 but the support isn’t there yet. Anyway the point wasn’t *current* games, it was that it is not futureproof as it’s not even the best we have available today.

        1. Don’t think that’s really the point, pushing higher capacity means its finally getting cheap enough for most devices to have and that means higher penetration of the market for 4GB capacities… So, we’ll soon see this in other devices and that future proofs the general market…

          Mind, what’s easily affordable depends on how much it’s mass produced and used and the more that it then the lower the unit costs… Like one of the reasons why W8 tablets are still stuck with 2GB of RAM is because they are also using mobile parts and availability and afford-ability limits what they can offer…

    2. Wrong. The s4 pro in your n4 is the processor you’re thinking of. The snapdragon 800 is 100% a15.
