As expected, Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has launched its latest low-cost smartphone with better-than-you’d expect specs. The Xiaomi Redmi Note features a 5.5 inch display, an octa-core processor, and a starting price of just about $130 without a contract.

Sadly it’s only available in China at launch. But Xiaomi is starting to expand beyond its home country, so there’s a chance we could see this phone or something similar in other regions eventually.

Xiaomi Redmi Note

The Redmi Note features a 5 .5 inch, 1280 x 720 pixel IPS display, a MediaTek MT6592 octa-core CPU with Mali-450 graphics, 8GB of storage, a 13MP rear camera, and a 5MP front-facing camera.

Xiaomi will offer two models. One will have a 1.4 GHz CPU and 1GB of RAM while a slightly fancier model will be clocked at 1.7 GHz and will features 2GB of RAM. The more powerful model will sell for about $160.

The phone supports dual SIM cards and works on TD-SCDMA/HSPA networks as well as GSM/Edge networks in China.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note features a 3200mAh battery, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean software and the MIUI user interface. Both models of the phone should be available in China starting March 26th and will be available in in black, blue, green, and pink color options.

  1. @Joe,
See the unboxing and review at Mobile Geeks. Sascha states that it isn’t the better phone, but the better phone at that price point.
