Synology offers a line of Network Attached Storage systems under its DiskStation brand. Hook one up to your home network, add a few hard drives and you can backup the files from all your computers and stream audio, video, or other files to your TV using AirPlay, DLNA, or Bluetooth.
Now Synology has added Chromecast support.
All you have to do is load the Synology DS Audio or DS Video apps on your iOS or Android device, connect to your DiskStation to find the files you want to stream, and send them to your Chromecast.
Since DiskStation storage devices can connect to the internet, you don’t even need to be connected to your home network to stream audio or video to a Chromecast. The company’s apps will let you stream to any Chromecast connected to the same WiFi network as your phone or tablet. So if you’re at a friend’s house you can pull up videos on your home media server and stream them over the internet.
Synology DiskStation systems sell for around $150 for a 1-bay unit without a hard drive to as much as $3000 for a 12-bay model. You can find some of the company’s more popular options at Amazon.
