Samsung’s next-generation of low-cost Android tablets are on the way, and now we have a better idea of how at least one model will look.
According to @evleaks, what you’re looking at is a 7 inch Samsung Galaxy Tab 4.
Samsung hasn’t officially announced the tablet yet, but specs for 8 inch and 10.6 inch Galaxy Tab 4 models showed up at benchmarking websites recently, suggesting that the new tablets will feature:
- 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor
- Adreno 305 graphics
- 1280 x 800 pixel display
- 3MP rear camera
- 1.3MP front-facing camera
- 16GB of storage (or maybe 8GB)
- Android 4.4 KitKat
The Galaxy Tab line of devices feature relatively inexpensive Android tablets with Samsung’s TouchWiz software.
The company also recently introduced a new Galaxy Tab Pro line of devices with higher-resolution displays, speedier processors, and higher prices. They tend to sell for $400 or more.
Meanwhile the more budget-friendly Galaxy Tab line of tablets are designed to compete with other low-cost tablets from Amazon, Asus, HP, and Dell.
If they sell the 16 GB for less than $200 it might be a decent deal.
Looks like the main innovation is to get rid of the massive bezels of past tablets.
First device like this I saw was Huawei’s X1, which also has full phone functionality.
Huawei even managed to squeeze a 5000 mAH battery into it. Hopefully everybody else follows suit!
If the new Note 8 comes without the annoying, wide bezels, I’d be interested.
Wait, they upgraded the display to 720p? That’s new. And finally a tolerable screen resolution.
1.5 GB of ram
16 gb of storage
$179 street price and it would be a good buy. Really like the square design.
Where’s the innovation, or have mainstream Android
tablets hit a plateau?
Which part of budget tablet didn’t you get?
Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox,
OpenOffice, SourceForge projects,
and Linux are free. Does that mean
they should not innovate?
OK – that’s software. Can you add a hardware device in your list?
Sometimes, innovation, means getting what most of us already have, available to those that can’t afford it.
That said, I’m not that impressed either even for a budget tablet. Quad core A7 is weaker than the A9s. Dell’s venue 8 is down to $153 at walmart. The 2012 Nexus 7 is $160. If the price goes as high as $200, then it’s why get this over something like a tegra note 7? By the time this is available, even the current nexus 7 may be price competitive. So depending on the price, this may not be that competitive.
Does look quite nice though. Hopefully the screen is nice and bright..
