Pipo is getting ready to launch some of the first tablets featuring Rockchip’s new RK3288 processor. The company is expected to introduce new models with 8.9 inch, 9.7 inch, and 10.1 inch high-resolution displays at the Hong Kong Electronics Fair in April… but given Rockchip’s popularity with Chinese tablet makers, I suspect Pipo won’t be the only company showing off new products powered by the RK3288 chip.
The Rockchip RK3288 processor is a 1.8 GHz ARM Cortex-A17 quad-core processor with ARM Mali T-760 graphics. It’s designed for mid-range tablets, offering better performance than earlier chips like the RK3188 without all of the features you’d get from a new 64-bit chip based on Cortex-A50 technology.
Pipo’s new tablets will have screen resolutions as high as 2560 x 1600 pixels (for the 10.1 inch model, and support for 4K video playback. All of the models are said to have “Retina” quality screens, so the smaller models are expected to have iPad-like 2048 x 1536 pixel screens.

I’ve already been burned by Pipo and their lack of support for my 3188 tablet. It needs work, but they don’t seem interested in ever updating anything.
I’m looking forward to the RK3288 PC stick that will come out eventually. Hopefully Linux devs will continue there efforts with the RK3288 as they have being doing with the RK3188.
Anyone know how a Cortex-A17 compares to a Cortex-A15?
That’s a less powerfull cpu, simplified cicruit, but consume less power and can run at higher frequency. The RK3288 is the first SoC with this CPU.
After owning 2 retina china tablets battery life is the area where these tablets fall short. If this is sorted in the new chips comming out then…happy days. I Love Pipo tabs.

The 3188 devices I’ve owned are quite good with a custom ROM from a caring developer.
Hopefully these will follow suit
