Sure, you can use the Google Chromecast to stream videos from Netflix, music from Pandora, or even games to your TV. But what about when you’re not really actively using your Chromecast?

Google includes a pretty wallpaper and clock widget that you can stare at while you decide which app to use. But MyCastScreen gives you something a bit more useful to look at… even it if doesn’t really replace your home screen just yet.

MyCastScreen

MyCastScreen shows time, weather, news, and traffic details in a Google Now cards-style layout. Just set your location, favorite news source, and a few other details and hit the Cast button and the Android app will give you info-at-a-glance on your TV screen.

The developer calls it a sort of home screen replacement… but unfortunately Google doesn’t actually offer a way to replace the default Chromecast screen. That means you won’t see your MyCastScreen page when you first power up your device… you’ll have to actively launch it from your phone or tablet.

In other words, you could just as easily check the news, traffic, weather and news on your phone. But MyCastScreen shows the sort of thing that could be possible if Google does eventually offer support for Chromecast home screen replacements.

The developer also plans to add new features including stock tickers, extended weather forecasts, image slideshows, and the ability to rearrange the widgets.

MyCastScreen is available from the Google Play Store for $0.99.
