It’s been a few years since Cowon released its last Android-powered portable media player. Now it looks like the company could be getting ready to launch a new model with high-end audio capabilities.

The Cowon Plenue P1 is a portable audio player with support for 24-bit/192 KHz audio.

The device features a 3.7 inch AMOLED touchscreen display, 128GB of build-in storage, and a microSD card slot.

It has a unibody aluminum case and a rather simple design with large volume buttons on the side of the case and not much else.

Cowon hasn’t officially announced the device yet, but it showed up at the Red Dot 21 design website recently. While there’s no mention of Android in the description, all of Cowon’s other devices sold under the Plenue brand have featured Android-based software.

What makes the new model is the support for high-quality audio… but that likely won’t come cheap. Similar devices from Sony and Astell & Kern sells for $1000 or more.

Theoretically it should be possible to make a much cheaper device with high-end audio hardware. But I suspect these devices are made in limited quantities due to relatively limited demand… and that’s going to keep them priced high enough to be niche products at best.

  2. I would love a modern version of my iPod classic (160GB) for about the same price ($250).

    1. Why do you think someone looking for a audiophile quality media player will even care about such things?

      1. If they don’t care, why buy something with Android in the first place? Cowon offers multiple other models without.

        1. Because this is going to be their best player.
You don’t buy an expensive dedicated audio player for angry birds.
