Chinese phone maker Xiaomi is giving one of its cheapest smartphones a bit of a spec bump. Xiaomi’s Hongmi is a $130 phone that has an 1.5 GHz MediaTek MT6589 quad-core processor. Now the company is offering a model called the Hongmi 1S which has a 1.6 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quad-core chip instead.

The new model also has twice the storage of the original, with 8GB of built-in flash storage instead of 4GB.

Other specs remain unchanged. Both phones have 4.7 inch, 1280 x 720 pixel displays, 1GB of RAM, 8MP rear cameras, 1.3MP front-facing cameras, a microSD card slot, and Xiaomi’s custom version of Android called MIUI.

Xiaomi has a reputation for offering high quality phones at low prices, but before the introduction of the Hongmi that typically meant phones with top-tier specs at Google Nexus-like prices. The Hongmi is probably more comparable to Motorola’s Moto G. Both are mid-range phones offered at low-end prices.

The Chinse phone maker recently started taking the first steps outside of its home country by introducing a version of the original Hongmi in Singapore, where it’ll be called the Redmi. There’s no word on whether we should expect to see a Remi 1s with a Qualcomm processor next.

    1. Basically a CPU, the most important thing to look at when buying a new phone. S400 is decent, the latest models use S800, Galaxy S5 will be the first to come with S805. For 130€ it’s worth it.

      1. there is a huge difference between the outdated s400 and s800 (the information of s805 in Gs5 is unconfirmed)
this processor is the same as quadcore mediateks in terms of performance
the only reason for using s400 is that qualcomm has a share in xiaomi stock

        1. I never said S800 was the same as S400. Of course S800 is much better, but S400 is decent for 130€ phone. If you are planning to spend fortune on your new phone go with S800, of course.

          1. why do you think that s400 is better than latest cheap quadcore MediaTek?
according to benchmarks, there is no difference between s400 and 6589T
according to my experience with 6582, it is very fast

          2. I recommand you to read my comments again, you don’t seem to understand anything I say.
