Sony may be getting ready to sell of its PC division, but the company has one more line of Vaio products to launch first. And the Sony Vaio Flip 11a is one of the most intriguing of the bunch.

First unveiled at CES in January, this 11.6 inch convertible works like a notebook or a tablet, supports digital pen input, has a full HD display, and has a starting price of $799 for a model with a Pentium Bay Trail processor.

That entry-level model is now available in the US from the Sony Store.

Sony Vaio Fit 11a

The $799 Vaio Flip 11a features an Intel Pentium N3520 processor, 4GB of RAM, a 128GB solid state drive, HDMI, USB 3.0, NFC, and a backlit keyboard.

It has a 1920 x 1080 pixel touchscreen display, and you can convert the computer from notebook to tablet mode by flipping the screen so that it faces away from the keyboard and then closing the lid so the screen is facing out.

The PC has an N-Trig active digitizer and comes with a pressure-sensitive Vaio Active Pen which you can use for writing or drawing, or for hovering over the display. While N-Trig isn’t everyone’s favorite digitizer maker, the pen seemed to work pretty well when I tested it at CES.

Sony also plans to offer models with up to 8GB of RAM and up to an Intel Core i7 processor, but the Bay Trail model is the first to hit the streets.

Overall it’s one of the most exciting new PCs I saw at CES this year. It’s just too bad it’ll be one of the last Vaio PCs released by Sony… and too bad that the company only promises up to 5 hours of battery life.

  1. To be clear, the Sony Fit series is not the same as the Flip series (the latter of which includes the Flip 11a discussed & linked here). The Fit is the cheap non-convertible option from Sony, replacing the E-series.

On the support angle, their press release states that “customers will continue to receive aftercare customer services”, likely through the normal life of the product (I would guess 2-3 years from launch); can’t count on much after that anyway, better get any drivers needed ASAP!

    1. Actually the naming has been pretty inconsistent. Some of their press materials call this the Fit 11a Flip PC, others just call it a Vaio Flip PC. Now that I look more closely at the Sony Store page, it’s sometimes called a Fit 13a/ Flip PC.

I give up. I’m changing the headline to say Flip since it’s more descriptive that way. 🙂

      1. The branding varies by region. They’re flips in the US. Elsewhere it’s more complicated.

    1. I have this question too. I was interested in this ultraportable but with the Vaio line being sold and kept only within Japan, I changed my mind.
