Mozilla and its hardware partners are introducing a new range of Firefox OS smartphones featuring multi-core processors and higher-resolution displays. When the first crop of phones powered by Mozilla’s browser-based operating system hit the streets in 2013, they featured very basic specs such as single-core chips and 480 x 320 pixel displays. So a few spec bumps go a long way.

Firefox OS is also gaining support for devices with 4G LTE and NFC wireless technology, and the first 7 inch Firefox OS tablet is also on the way.

Alcatel OneTouch Fire S

Alcatel OneTouch, Huawei, LG, and ZTE are introducing new models with dual-core chips, including the ZTE Open C and Open II, the Alcatel OneTouch Fire C, Fire E, Fire E S, and Fire 7 tablet.

That tablet sports a 1.2 GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor, a 960 x 540 pixel display, and VGA cameras on the front and back of the device. The tablet measures 0.39 inches thick and weighs just over 10 ounces.

If you’re looking for something more phone-sized, the Fire S has a 4.5 inch, 960 x 540 pixel IPS display. a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor, 4G LTe support, an 8MP rear camera, 2MP front-facing camera and NFC.

The Fire E is the same size, but has a dual core CPU, 5MP and 0.3MP cameras, and lacks the IPS display or LTE support. Alcatel OneTouch’s new entry-level model is the Fire C with a 1.2 GHz dual-core CPU and a 3.5 inch, 480 x 320 pixel display.

ZTE’s Open C smartphone features a 4 inch, 800 x 480 pixel display, a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 CPU, 512MB of RAM, and a 2MP camera.

The Huawei Y300 sports a 4 inch WVGA display, a 1 GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM, a 5MP rear camera and 0.3MP front-facing camera, and 1950mAh battery.

While these phones and tablets are all better than 1st-generation Firefox OS hardware, that’s clearly not saying very much.

In addition to new hardware, Mozilla is promising new software features for Firefox OS, including a new universal search function, improved navigation, and more customization options for operators, manufacturers, and developers and users.

  1. Toujours naze. Pas de haut de gamme. Où est le WiFi ac ? Où est le E-ink ? Autant racheter un mobile plutôt qu’un smartphone Firefox OS…
