MediaTek working on a 6-core CPU

02/28/2014 at 11:15 AM by Brad Linder 4 Comments

Samsung isn’t the only company that thinks there’s a middle ground between quad-core and octa-core chips. Chip maker MediaTek is apparently working on its own hexa-core processor.

According to a leaked product roadmap, the upcoming MT6591 is a 6-core processor with support for HSPA+ wireless networks and 1080p HD video playback.

MediaTek hexa-core roadmap

The new hexa-core chip has a clock speed of 1.5 GHz and it’s apparently part of MediaTek’s “mainstream” product family rather than the company’s entry-level or premium product lines.

What’s not clear is whether the new chip uses big.LITTLE technology like Samsung’s hexa-core Exynos 5260 (which pairs 2 ARM Cortex-A15 cores with 4 ARM Cortex-A7 processor cores).

Other upcoming (and unannounced) chips in the roadmap include a 1.7 GHz octa-core, ARM Cortex-A53 64-bit processor called the MediaTek MT6572 which is due out toward the end of 2014, and the MT6571 1.3 GHz ARM Cortex-A7 dual-core chip for entry-level devices due out in the next few months.

1080p video playback was touted in the single core SOCs. It’s time to pick something else to fluff that marketing up with, wouldn’t you say?
Although with these guys maybe they’ve finally broken through that barrier with this latest tepid offering.

Which core is this? If it’s an A7 then it’s not very interesting.

“…. 1.7 GHz octa-core, ARM Cortex-A53 64-bit processor called the MediaTek MT6572 ….”

Brad, I think you got a number twister here. According to above roadmap, this 1.7GHz 64-bit SoC is called MT6752. The MT6572 is a Cortex-A7 based 2-core SoC.

Nah, their naming is just ridiculous. Bottom left corner shows the MT6572/M is that dual-core chip, while the upper right corner has an ARM Cortex-A53 octa-core chip called the MT6572.
