Sailfish OS is a Linux-based operating system built on the bones of MeeGo. The folks at Jolla have been building the software for a while, and the first Sailfish phones recently went on sale in Europe. But while the operating system is based on open source software, the apps that run on Sailfish are another story… or at least they were until now.
Jolla has released the source code for the Sailfish Browser, making the web browser the first fully open source app from the Finnish company.
The Sailfish Browser uses Mozilla’s open source Gecko rendering engine, which makes it a cousin of the Firefox web browser.Â
Of course, since you can run Android apps on Sailfish, there’s nothing stopping you from just downloading and installing Firefox. But if you’d prefer to examine or alter the code of Jolla’s own web browser, you can find the public repository at GitHub.
