Folks have been using AdBlock and similar tools to strip ads from webpages almost as long as there have been ads on webpages. But while many of those browser plugins will replace ads with a blank spot on the page, AdBlock Vocab aims to replace ads with something useful: GRE vocabulary words.
Basically AdBlock Vocab turns the web into a flash card for folks studying for their college entrance exams.
The app is based on AdBlock Plus, but you’ll need to disable that plugin or any other ad blocker you’ve installed if you want to see the vocabulary words.
I’m always a bit ambivalent about ad blocking software. On the one hand online advertising makes it possible for many bloggers, journalists, and others to devote their time to creating content — Liliputing would at best be a part-time hobby if I couldn’t earn enough money to make a living. On the other hand, some websites are so plastered with ads that it’s hard to find the content.
Anyway, while I don’t use ad blockers myself I know plenty of Liliputing readers do… and AdBlock Plus is clever enough that I figured it was worth a mention. It could come in handy if you’re studying for a big test — and it could be inspiration for folks looking to replace ads with something other than vocabulary words… like cat photos, maybe?
