Less than two days after Samsung introduced the Galaxy S5 smartphone, Chinese device maker Goophone copied Samsung’s design and introduced the Goophone S5.

It’s a $300 handset that takes almost all of its design cues from Samsung… but it has slightly different hardware under the hood. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, because on paper the Goophone S5 actually looks like a pretty good phone for the price.

The Goophone S5 features a 5 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel display, a 2 GHz MediaTek MT6592 octa-core processor with Mali 450 graphics, and 2GB of RAM.

It has 32GB of storage, a 13MP rear camera, and 5MP front-facing camera. The phone has a 2800mAh battery and supports dual SIM cards. It’s a carrier unlocked phone with support for GSM, HSDPA, and HSUPA and it’ll be available in black, white, gold or blue.

If there’s one major downside, it’s that the phone runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean instead of the newer Android 4.4 KitKat. MediaTek’s chip, while pretty powerful, also likely won’t be as fast as the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chip in the Galaxy S5.

But given that Samsung introduced the Galaxy S5 on February 24th, it’s impressive that the Goophone S5 exists at all on February 26th (although I suspect it only exists as a spec sheet and drawing at this point… whether it’ll ship before Samsung’s phone hits the streets in April remains to be seen).

  1. Only operates on T-Mobile 2G in the US. Can’t any Chinese mfg make a T-Mobile 4G/HSPA phone.

    1. That might be changing soon. Mediatek and others are finally making LTE capable processors.

  2. “2 GHz MediaTek MT6592 octa-core processor”

    Holy shit man.

Wait a little more and we will have 8-core 64 Bits at 3GHz.

  3. I hope that picture of the “Goophone” is not their promo shot, because it really looks just to have been ‘shopped – in the area where the Samsung displays its “Galaxy S5” branding, the Goophone appears to have some distortion, from cloning or otherwise…

    1. Yeah, that’s obviously a photoshop of the Samsung. I would guess the real phone will look pretty similar, but with slightly worse build quality. I’ve owned a couple cheap Chinese tablets and while they were excellent for the price, they were clearly not made to the standards we are used to in the west.
