Sony’s QX10 and Qx100 lenses are designed to turn your smartphone into a higher-quality camera. Just clip the lens to your phone, use your display as a viewfinder, and you’ve got access to higher-end optics than you’d get with the tiny lens that comes built into your phone.
But what if you want an even bigger viewfinder? Now Sony is offering a tablet mount that lets you use the camera lenses with larger Sony devices including the company’s 6.4 inch Xperia Z Ultra smartphone or a Sony Xperia Tablet Z.
The folks at Xperia Blog have a run-down of the new SPA-TA1 tablet attachment, which holds the camera in place on the back of your tablet.
The lenses aren’t cheap. The QX10 sells for $248 and the QX1000 costs $498. But they offer optical zoom, high quality sensors, and the ability to pair with your phone or tablet over WiFi and NFC so you can save images straight to you mobile device for editing, sharing, or viewing.
You don’t need a clip to use the lenses. You can hold your phone or tablet in one hand and the lens in the other. But the clip gives you a bit more of a traditional camera experience… or it would if traditional cameras had viewfinders that were 6 to 11 inches across.
