No company has offered a new device designed to run webOS since HP discontinued its webOS phones and tablets in 2011. But now LG is getting ready to introduce the first new devices in years that run the operating system originally developed by Palm.

LG acquired the remnants of webOS from HP earlier this year, and now the company plans to show off smart TVs running the software at the Consumer Electronics Show in January.

According to ZDNet, the new LG TV will feature a 2.2 GHz dual-core ARM processor, 1.5GB of memory, and an operating system based on webOS which allows the TV to stream content from the internet and run apps.

It’s not clear at this point what webOS will look like on televisions. Some of the hallmark features of the smartphone and tablet versions were support for multitasking using a “card” style user interface, a universal search function, and support for apps developed using web technologies such as HTML5.

Some of those features would make no sense on a TV screen — but the underlying code could enable support for a powerful TV platform which can handle web apps, multitasking, and multimedia activities. LG will also provide tools for developers to create third-party apps that will run on webOS televisions.

We should learn more in January.

  1. I hope that eventually that webOS comes back to mobile. Starting with a smart TV platform (where the market is still nascent and with minimal competition) is a great place to start building up developer support for apps and content. Eventually, this could come back into mobile with a large collection of apps, and thus enter it into competition with other operating systems.

  2. You folks obviously missed the reviews of the “add in HDMI sticks” recently done. See where I’m going with this? If anything, LG should create a webOS based system on a stick. Include some iteration of Miracast or wireless streaming from a cellular device AND most importantly, some form of ALC which was JUST released yesterday (LG, buy this company now). That allows access to Android’s apps on the device. Oh, and make this device $35 just like the Chromecast and watch every dumb TV suddenly come to life with webOS devices again. PROFIT!

Market it to TV users like crazy. Seriously, this is how you bring webOS back to life. Sell it in TV’s AND sell it in add-in sticks. THEN, slip in a phone or a tablet again…

  3. Let’s everyone try to put defunct operating systems into new products, shall we?

    WTF

  4. I really don’t get these companies’ schizophrenic nature with operating systems — pick one and put it on everything instead of a bunch of half baked crap that have no apps and are utterly pointless, unless they are going to invest heavily to make it very successful and get app developers which I’m sure LG will NOT do.

I’ve got one of LG’s smart projectors. . . has never seen an update and has all of 5 apps that work like crap.
