Chip maker Qualcomm is reportedly working on a a few new processors for smartphones and tablets, including models with 64-bit architecture and possibly a new octa-core chip.

The upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 is a 64-bit chip with integrated support for 4G LTe networks. Meanwhile, Chinese news sources suggest we could see a new 8-core MSM8994/APQ8094 from Qualcomm soon.

While the 400 series chips are aimed at mid-range phones, it’s likely that the octa-core processor, which could also be a 64-bit chip, will be designed for higher performance devices. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 and 800 chips released in 2013 power some of the fastest Android phones and tablets on the market a the moment.

Qualcomm wouldn’t be the first company to produce 64-bit or octa-core mobile chips. The Apple A7 processor used in the latest iPhones and iPads is an ARM-based 64-bit processor, and Samsung and MediaTek have already beat Qualcomm to the octa-core space.
