HP is updating its Classmate notebook for students and schools by adding a bit of Bay Trail for long battery life and improved performance.

The new HP Classmate is a small notebook with an Intel Celeron N2000 series processor and Windows 8.1 software.

HP Classmate

Like earlier models, the new HP Classmate is based off Intel’s Classmate PC reference design, which means we may see other companies launch Bay Trail laptops for the education market in the coming months.

While the HP Classmate isn’t a tablet, it does have a 10 inch screen that can be tilted back 180 degrees so it’s pretty much level with the keyboard. The notebook has a USB 3.0 port, a USB 2.0 port, and HDMI port. HP hasn’t provided many more details about the laptop yet, but it also has a webcam which can record HD video, a durable case design, and it’s due to launch in January for an “affordable” price.

  1. “Not as clumsy or random as a touch screen; an elegant keyboard for a more civilized age”

  2. If it does not have a touchscreen, IMO, it would be better with Windows 7. Windows 8 is made for computers and tablets with touchscreens. I have Windows 8 on a non-touchscreen notebook computer and I find it frustrating.
I keep wandering about the ‘an affordable price’. It could mean different things to different people. If it is at my idea of reasonable, it could be a bargain.
