Say you’re using your phone to search for a movie or actor and the best search result Google provides takes you to the IMDB website… but you’ve already got the IMDB app installed on your phone. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could just tap a button to bring up the relevant page in the app rather than a web browser?

Google thinks so. The company has started updating its Google Search app for Android to work with apps.

Google Search in apps

Sometimes when you enter a search query, Google will let you know that there’s an app you might want to install to help find recipes, make travel plans, or look up movies.

If you already have an app that Google recognizes installed, you may find an “Open in App” button in your search results. That way you have the choice, for example, of opening the IMDB mobile web page or going straight to the same page in the IMDB app for Android.

The new Google Search app will roll out to folks running Android 2.3 or later soon, and similar features are already available when you use Google in the Android or Chrome web browsers on an Android device.

Only a limited set of apps are supported at launch, but app developers can submit their software to have Google begin indexing it.
