The Yotaphone is a dual-screen smartphone that’s a party up front, and business on the back. At first glance, it looks like any other Android smartphone with a full color LCD display. But flip it over and there’s a second screen on the back, and this one’s an energy-sipping, sunlight readable, grayscale ePaper screen.

In other words, the Yotaphone is like a smartphone and an eReader in one device — offering the full functionality of a phone with potential battery life that comes closer to what you’d expect from a Kindle… maybe.

After years of development, Yota Devices plans to ship the phone by the end of 2013.

The Russian company has been showing off the phone for a while and had initially promised a November ship date, but now the company is saying it’ll be available in December.

Yota hasn’t announced an official price for the phone yet, but specs include a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro dual-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a 13MP rear camera, 1MP front camera, WiFi, GPS, LTE, and an 1800mAh battery.

The color screen is a 4.3 inch, 1280 x 720 pixel LCD. The ePaper screen is a 640 x 360 pixel display with 16 shades of gray, which you can use to read eBooks, surf the web, or even make phone calls using the phone dialer when you don’t need full color or fast screen refresh rates.

You can sign up to pre-order the phone at the Yota website.
