The Toshiba Encore is an 8 inch tablet with an Intel Atom Bay Trail processor, Windows 8.1 software, and Microsoft Office 2013 Home & Student. Toshiba introduced the tablet in September, and now it’s up for pre-order from Amazon for $330.
Tosihba’s first 8 inch Windows tablet is powered by an Intel Atom Z3740 quad-core processor and feature 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage.
The tablet has an 8 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel IPS display, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, and Intel HD graphics. It has dual microphones, an 8MP rear camera and 2MP front-facing camera, a micro HDMI port, microSd card slot, and micro USB 2.0 port.
The tablet measures 8.4″ x 5.4″ x 0.43″ and weighs 1.1 pounds, making it a bit heavier than the similarly-priced Acer Iconia W4 tablet or the $300 Dell Venue 8 Pro, both of which weigh closer to 14 ounces.
Lenovo’s upcoming Miix2 tablet is even thinner and lighter, measuring about 0.32 inches thick and weighing 12.3 ounces. That models’ expected to launch soon for around $299.
Update: The 32GB Miix 2 is already from Amazon for $300. thanks sri_tech!
I am looking to buy a notebook (IPAD Air, or Toshiba Encore or HP) small is good but not too small like ipad mini. I am not a tech savvy, I just want to to use microsoft office, excel and internet I have a business that I go out to people and let them fill up an application form, I want something to use and for my clients to fill up an application form using my notebook and then print later in the office all the forms. What can you recommend? and what apps software can you recommend. please
I have used my Toshiba Satellite Windows XP for 2 years and upgraded its system to Windows 8.1 on Monday! Now, I am caught in password lost on 8.1! https://lnkd.in/bm_wYwW
Really looks like out of the 8 inchers the Dell Venue 8 is the best way to go. It’s the least hideous, has more accessories (that I’ve seen anyways) and is the same price or cheaper, and as of tomorrow will the only one with 64gb available on amazon. I don’t really know how Toshiba and Acer expect to compete at $30 higher for the same specs and (for Acer atleast) a worse reputation.
There are things the Toshiba has that the Dell doesn’t. It has a faster processor, faster memory, HDMI out, GPS, stereo speakers, higher MP cameras, microphones with beam-forming technology… So if any of these are important to you, buy the Toshiba rather than the Dell.
Processor is the same, however the D version that dell uses doesn’t use dual channel. The Toshiba actually has slower memory but it runs in dual channel so it is slightly faster. Dell has hdmi out, stereo speakers I’m not sure on and i have no clue what beam forming microphone is. But i admit i didn’t know some of those things so good point on you sir 🙂 learn something new every day
Sorry, you’re right on the processor speed. But according to Anandtech’s Bay Trail preview, the processor the Toshiba uses has a peak memory bandwidth 60% more than the Dell (don’t know what that means in the real world). Plus, importantly, the Dell does NOT have HDMI out. It has Miracast, but that needs an expensive dongle/receiver, and people seem to be having terrible trouble getting it to work.
Ya the memory bandwidth is mostly because of the dual channel. I could have swore the venue 8 had hdmi out, I must have read a bad spec list. That’s a very good point, I’m glad I read this! I appreciate the information you have given me thanks 🙂
Dell has no HDMI out , It only has Miracast which is not as reliable as plugging it in
Still holding out hope for a slider UMPC with a mouse (optical trackpad or trackpoint)! If it has a 7″ – 8″ screen and/or large bezels then maybe a split keyboard design would be good.
Sliders aren’t common, possibly because they limit the angle(s) you can tilt the
tablet/screen. Keyboard docks are more popular (plus mfrs add ports, battery, and
even mass storage on the dock). An alternative would be a Bluetooth, USB, or
combination (I have one) keyboard, which you can pack in the case you put
your tablet in.
I think he’s talking about handheld thumb usage so docks and dangling keyboards aren’t great for that. Also, that limits the size of the device itself which also reduces the usefulness of such accessories.
I’m personally hoping for such a form factor (ie. a spiritual successor to the OQO sliders). I travel for leisure often and I only take a single bag with me where there’s only enough room for a UMPC. I’d prefer an OQO slider type device for handheld use. On screen keyboards will always take up screen space on the already small screen. Apart from drawing and inking, active digitizers aren’t better than a mouse pointer for me either. I also boot into Linux so terminal use is much better with a physical keyboard.
Is the dell venue pro 8 the only eight incher with an active stylus?
yes!
I hear the stylus is pretty bad:
