The first smartphone to ship with CyanogenMod preloaded will hit the street in December. Oppo has announced the the limited edition Oppo N1 with CyanogenMod will be available next month.

Oppo’s N1 smartphone features a 5.9 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor, and a 13MP camera which can rotate to face the front or back of the phone.

In China, the N1 units Oppo will feature the company’s own custom version of Android, called Color OS. But a small number will be available with CyanogenMod’s custom version of Android running as the default operating system.

Folks who don’t buy the limited edition phone but who do buy the international version of the Oppo N1 will also be able to install CyanogenMod using the Oppo N1’s stock recovery. You won’t need to install a custom recovery or download any additional files.

CyanogenMod started its life as a custom ROM which hobbyists installed on phones and tablets as an alternative to the software that came with their phones.

Now CyanogenMod Inc is a company which is continuing to lead development of the open source operating system based on Android, but which is also seeking partnerships with companies such as Oppo to pre-install the software on devices.

Reportedly no money changed hands in the Oppo deal, but the partnership is a big step for helping CyanogenMod reach a larger audience while providing Oppo customers a chance to pick up a device with a customized version of the stock Android experience.

Unlike the CyanogenMod software that you can install yourself on many devices, the Oppo N1 version of CyanogenMod will not come pre-rooted, but users should be able to root their own devices. What’s nice is that you won’t need to root your phone, unlock the bootloader, or install a custom recovery in order to install CyanogenMod.

The Oppo N1 with CyanogenMod will also come in special packaging with both the CyanogenMod and Oppo mascots, Cid and Ollie, and it’ll come with CyanogenMod stickers.

The phone should be available internationally for less than $600.

  1. looks nice but Im holding off for an all rounder with snapdragon s800 for always on listening , not the note 3 because of size and AMOLED burn in (my S2 is damaged) , not the LG G2 because of speaker volume and not the nexus 5 because of camera speed and battery

  2. Whoopie. Another freaking huge Android phone. Will someone please make a decent Android phone which I can put in my pocket so I can ditch my iPhone?!?

  4. Does this phone have Google Maps and the rest of the google apps suite? Last I heard, Google keeps a pretty tight reign on licensing these. Unlike Android, Google Apps aren’t freely distributed.

    I can see tablets getting by without google apps – specifically google maps. But an Android phone without google maps? That’s a pretty big disadvantage.

    1. Getting those apps on the phone should be pretty simple. Installing the ‘Google Apps’ (commonly referenced as ‘gapps’) is a pretty straightforward process on any custom ROM, such as Cyanogen Mod.
