Yahoo is rolling out a major update to its free email service for web and mobile users. The latest version of Yahoo Mail takes some of its cues from Gmail, which isn’t a surprise since Yahoo’s new chief Marissa Mayer was a major player in the Google empire before moving to Yahoo.
But in some ways, the new Yahoo Mail actually goes above and beyond what you get from Gmail… although not necessarily in ways that will matter to everyone.
Google did two things to seriously shake up the email space when it launched Gmail in 2004. First, the company offered 1GB of online storage space for free, something that was unheard of up until that time. Now customers get even more free storage from most major free email services.
Second, Gmail did away with the old way of viewing message threads by offering a new “conversations” view where all replies are grouped together to reduce inbox clutter.
Yahoo Mail now offers conversation view as well… and in terms of storage, Yahoo is sort of taking a page from Google’s playbook and offering more free space for your email messages than you’ll probably need… for at least another 10 years. Yahoo Mail users now get 1TB of free storage space.
Update: As ddh819 reminds me, Yahoo Mail already offered “unlimited” storage, which means that technically 1TB is kind of a step backward.
Other new features (some of which had previously been available to Yahoo Mail Plus customers), include:
- Automatic message forwarding
- Support for up to 200 filters to automatically sort messages
- Download messages for offline access with POP
- Disposable email addresses
- Quick Actions appear when you hover or select a message on the web, or when you swipe across it on mobile
- New themes based on curated Flickr photos
If you set a new theme in your desktop web browser, it’ll automatically be synchronized with your Yahoo Mail app on your Android, iOS, or Windows Phone device, or vice versa.
How to sort emails alphabetically of Sender email id in new yahoo.
Yeah, ironically gmail’s forced conversation views kept me a yahoo user for a long time. Now yahoo’s forcing this garbage on me… I really hate everything Marissa Mayer touches
New improved NSA fast-tracking
How do I forward one message and not the whole group of messages? I hate the grouped messages, too. One message which is a status report involved 190 groupings. Every day I get a new message – every day I get another grouping. Waste of space.
When you find out PLEASE let me know at [email protected]
I just found the answer! Go to Settings (to right corner) then click on “Viewing Emails” and UNcheck the conversations box.
Thxs Jennifer.
I was able to do that so they don’t show on my computer but they are still showing on my Android phone. Do you know how to fix that? I can’t stand the grouping of messages.
How do I turn off grouped messaging? I absolutely hate it, that’s why I never jumped on the gmail bandwagon (although I use everything else: calendar, drive, etc.)
Go to Settings (to right corner) then click on “Viewing Emails” and UNcheck the conversations box.
I tried that but the box will not uncheck
Can the storage be used for non-email data?
i thought yahoo mail had unlimited storage?
Huh… forgot about that. So technically this is a new cap… although I doubt it’ll affect anyone for a long time.
