Thin and light laptops aren’t just for consumers. Toshiba’s latest ultrabooks are aimed at business customers looking for portable notebooks with 13 to 15 inch displays, long battery life, and enterprise-friendly features including enhanced security features, Windows Pro software, and docking solutions.

Technically, Toshiba isn’t marketing the new Toshiba Portege Z30, Tecra Z40, and Tecra Z50 laptops as ultrabooks, but most can be configured to fit pretty comfortably into Intel’s definition of an ultrabook.

Personally I’m most interested in the Portege Z30, which is the smallest member of the family.

Toshiba Z-Series

The Toshiba Portege Z30 features an Intel Haswell processor (with support for up to a Core i7 chip), sports a 13.3 inch non-reflective HD display with support for an optional touchscreen, packs up to 8GB of storage, and up to 512GB of solid state storage.

Toshiba says the non-touchscreen model should get up to 12 hours of battery life, while the touch-enabled version runs for up to 10 hours.

Both models feature 3 USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI port, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, an SD card slot, Intel WiDi, and optional mobile broadband. The laptop has a spill-resistant, backlit keyboard, TPM security, and other security features.

Toshiba will offer the laptop with a choice of Windows 8.1 Pro or Windows 7 Pro software.

The Portege Z30 measures 12.4″ x 8.9″ x 0.7″ and weighs 2.6 pounds.

Folks looking for larger models will be able to pick up the 14.1 inch Tecra Z40 with an HD or HD+ display, or the Tecra Z50 with a 15.6 inch HD or full HD display as well. Both models will be available with optional NVIDIA graphics.

Weighing 3.2 pounds and 3.9 pounds respectively, these laptops are pretty light-weight for notebooks of their size… but I find 13.3 inch and smaller ultrabooks to be significantly more portable.

  1. I’m glad to see this nice trend to go back to non reflective screens and luckily Toshiba is following it. Unfortunately there is also a bad trend of adding numberpads to 15″ models. I remember the Mac Book Pro and the new Elitebook 850 as fortunate exceptions. I wonder if we’ll ever see 16:10 screens again, which will kill numberpads. I wonder if the inexplicable success of those tiny 13″ laptops is a reaction to 15″ ones growing so wide because of the 16:9 screen and numberpad combination.
