Samsung starts taking pre-orders for its 7 inch tablet aimed at kids (and parents) on November 1st, and starting November 10th the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Kids will be available from US retailers including Amazon, Best Buy and Toys R Us for $230.

The tablet’s basically a semi-rugged version of the company’s existing Galaxy Tab 3. It also comes with software aimed at kids, including a custom user interface, games and educational apps, and parental controls.

The tablet has a 7 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, front and rear cameras, and a microSD card slot. It runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean software.

Samsung sells the adult version of the tablet for $199 or less, so what you’re getting with the kid-friendly version is a bumper case and pre-loaded software that could save you the time of finding child-friendly apps, games, and other content on your own.

There will also be a bundle deal for a model with a hard case for $250.

Samsung is hardly the first company to offer a tablet aimed at kids. It’s just offering one of the most expensive models.

  1. I really like the idea of a kids tablet but this seems outdated and expensive from day one. Why not just get a Nexus 7 16gb/32gb and an otterbox or similar rugged case? I would lose the sd card slot but would gain Kit Kat and better specs. I really wish some company would get this right but every one I have seems well intentioned but not well thought out. (ie OLPC XO tablet)
