Tired of downloading an app on your Android tablet only to find out it was clearly designed for a tiny smartphone? Google rolled out a “Designed for tablets” section of the Google Play Store last year, and on November 21st the company will make that the default view for folks browsing for apps while using a tablet.

Users will still be able to look for apps designed for smaller screens, but you’ll have to go out of your way to find them, and they’ll be labeled “Designed for phones.”

Google Play designed for tablets

Not all tablet apps will look alike — but they’re all designed to work on devices with 7 inch and larger displays. For instance, phone apps often offer only a single column of content, but tablets have larger screens and can accommodate multi-pane layouts.

Google also recommends using higher-resolution icons and other graphics, larger font sizes, and larger screen shots in the Google Play Store, among other things.

You can find the company’s tablet app quality checklist at the Google Developers site.
