You can use most tablets anywhere in the house… or outside the house. That’s the beauty of thin and light machines with batteries. But some tablets are designed for use in specific environments.
Sony is marketing its new Xperia Table Z: Kitchen Edition tablet as a kitchen companion. So what sets this $650 Android tablet apart from the company’s other tablets with prices starting at $500? A few cooking apps with recipes and videos, a folding stand, and… a digital meat thermometer.
Sony’s Xperia Tablet Z is already waterproof, which makes it a decent choice for use in the kitchen, where you might accidentally splash some food or water on the screen. But as far as I’m aware, Sony is the first company to offer an iGrill wireless meat thermometer as an accessory for an Android tablet.
The thermometer features Bluetooth and lets you monitor the temperature of your food from your tablet while you’re up to 200 feet from the oven.
The rest of the specs are identical to those for the standard 32GB Xperia Z which sells for $600, including:
- 10.1 inch, 1920 x 1200 pixel display
- Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor
- 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage
- Android 4.1
- Up to 10 hours of battery life
- WiFi, Bluetooth
- MicroSD card slot, USB port, headset jack
- 10.5″ x 6.8″ x 0.3″
- 1.1 pounds
It can also withstand immersion in up to 3 feet of water for up to a half hour.
Sony isn’t the first company to offer a tablet for cooks. The Archos ChefPad is a 13.3 inch tablet with a semi-rugged case. And the Qooq is a kitchen companion with a custom, recipe-oriented operating system and a splash-proof case.
